The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is poised to take legal action against businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, widely known as Cubana Chief Priest, for alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency.
Scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the arraignment before the Federal High Court in Lagos signals a significant step in addressing issues related to currency misuse.
According to reports, Cubana Chief Priest faces a three-count charge stemming from his alleged actions of spraying and tampering with Naira notes during social events, a violation of the Central Bank Act of 2007.
The charges, filed by the EFCC’s prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo and seven other legal representatives of the commission, highlight specific incidents dating back to February 13, 2024, and earlier occasions in 2020 and January 2024.
In the first count, it is alleged that Cubana Chief Priest sprayed N500 notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria during a social event at Eko Hotel for an extended period, contravening the provisions of the Central Bank Act.
Similar allegations are made in counts two and three, referring to incidents in 2020 and January 2024, respectively.
As the case unfolds in the courtroom, it serves as a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s financial system.
