6 Youths And 1 Soldier Killed In Rival Groups Clash In Edo Community

At least six youths and one soldier have reportedly died in a rival groups clash between youths contesting for leadership in Obayantor community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The incident was said to have happened on Saturday night, March 12.

HGS Media Plus learnt that a youth leadership brought soldiers into the community to search for firearms after report that their rival were in possession of firearms.

This consequently sparked the heat between the youths resulting to conflict between them and the soldiers

There were report that a reprisal attack was laid by the soldiers over their colleague who was reportedly killed.

However, the Nigerian Army, 4 Brigade, Benin denied that the operation was a reprisal.

Spokesperson of the brigade, Capt. Yemi Sokoya said they went there after a report from the Department of State Services that some hoodlums were disturbing the community and stockpiling weapons.

He added that the communal crisis was not part of why they went there.

He also said that hoodlums engaged the troop in a gun duel on getting to the community which prompted the attacked.

Two AK-47 rifles, three pump-action guns, one double-barrelled gun, 32 cartridges, five mobile phones and an ID card belonging to the state vigilance group, were recovered from the scene.

Meanwhile, spokesperson of the State Police Command, Bello Kontongs, said it was a military operation and that he had no information on it
